Project Selvedge Challenge # 1

The "unfortunate fabric contest":

From your grab bag of woodland scenes and cherry blossoms, make a garment (or garments) that exemplifies you as a designer. What inspires you? Consider this a wordless mission statement. You can manipulate the fabric in any way you want, but you cannot use any additional materials (except a $5 notion budget at Selvedge). You must incorporate at least 2 different printed fabrics from your bag. "Make it work," as the say

The garments are due March 5 @ 6p, but in order to get on the Fashion Show roster, you need to contact Selvedge by March 1 (541 7171).

Fashion show at 7pm.

PROJECT SELVEDGE:

As promised, here are the
Rules and Regs:
You must be available the following dates for Fashion Shows (all Fridays):
March 5
March 12
March 26

April 2
April 9
April 16 (or 15?)

Finale! May 7
.............................................................................................................................

If accepted as a contestant, you must participate in all challenges and have no outside assistance.
Each week, one contestant will be eliminated based on the judge's critiques and decisions.
Each contestant is responsible for finding a reliable model to wear the clothes created in each challenge.
Before each show, designers will be allowed to accessorize their model with items from Betty's Divine.
Each challenge has specific guidelines, a budget and rules. Supplies will be provided by Selvedge and each contestant will have a week to sew the garment at home.
All construction and design must be done without help from others.
Ready-made patterns may be used as long as they are modified significantly.
Two designers will compete in the final challenge and fashion show for the grand prize.
In order of priority, each challenge will be judged on:
1. overall design
2. creativity
3. solution to challenge
4. quality of craftsmanship & fit on the model.

Thanks, & good luck!
(I didn't bore you with ALL the details. Catch those on our website selvedgestudio.com)

Resolutions for the New Year:

‘Tis the season for New Year’s resolutions and Selvedge has made you a little list:

# 1. Let your creativity flow with one of our many fashion design competitions (check out November in the blog archive). & get going on your portfolio for Project Selvedge!

#2. No better way to loose weight than to get addicted to a sewing project (who has time to eat? Plus that would require you clean your project off the kitchen table).

Selvedge has tons of classes, workshops, and patterns on our website for your newest addiction-hey there are worse things to be addicted to…this one’s doctor approved.

#3.
Make friends: invite the girls over for a crafting party: Wine + girlie giggles multiplied by awesome fabric = a darn good time. Trust me, we do it all day at work-well without the wine-for the most part.

#4. Learn something new! Sewing is good for your mind body and soul so put your book club on hold and start your own sew lounge.

Selvedge to the rescue with expert (but mostly just super fun) teachers for classes and workshops for all skill levels. Go to the website before you miss something! selvedgestudio.com

NATIONAL JACKET CHALLENGE

Well...winter is officially here and you know what that means right?! It is time to turn on your fashion design brains!! We're gearing up for Project Selvedge (you know, our annual fashion design competition), but in the meantime-put your thinking caps on cause Selvedge is proud to announce our involvement in a NATIONAL JACKET COMPETITION.
Here's the deal:

1. Make a jacket. It can be of your own design or from a commercial pattern (you do get brownie points for making the pattern yourself, just sayin').
2. This is not a team project. If your friend wants to help, tell him to enter his own jacket!
3. The criteria by which your jacket will be judges is as follows: a. creativity b. fit on model and craftsmanship.
4. Your jacket will be judged by a panel of 3 amazingly talented folks at a live fashion show on First Friday February 5 at 7p at Selvedge (509 S Higgins). At which point we will require full disclosure of costs of supplies, patterns used, etc. (The jacket itself will be due January 31st).
5. There will be a spending limit of $100 to keep the competition fair. If you get your fabric from Selvedge you get 20% off your supplies (which means $120, yeah?). You are free to use your "stash," I've know we've all got one. But be conscious of what your fabrics are worth-don't tell me you got 5 yards of cashmere for $45, not a chance.
6. Of course, there will be prizes! $100 in cash, $50 gift certificate to Selvedge and dinner for two at Iza-our newest Hip Strip restaurant. Plus, anyone who makes a jacket will be automatically entered as an applicant into our fourth annual Project Selvedge-unless you don't want to be for some crazy reason! Oh yeah!! And your the winning jacket will be featured in a spread in Threads for the world to see.

I know you've got a lot on your plate right now, but just start your sketching-I predict you'll be rearing to go by the new year (do I smell a resolution?).

#1 project for fall

FABRIC COVERED CANVAS FRAMES:

STEP ONE: cut your focus fabric 7-10" wider and longer than your canvas frame

STEP TWO: pull fabric tightly over the back of your canvas and staple in place. *(tip: start in the middle of each side and work your way out to the corners-pull it tight)

STEP THREE: finish the corners and proudly hang it on your wall

variations: use this process to cover a corkboard for fashionable organization or go green and cheap by recovering an ugly old painting canvas from goodwill (or your own basement). different sizes of canvas and fabrics can change the look of your project for the perfect combo
